SHU XC Runners Pick Up Three NEC Awards
FAIRFIELD, CT (September 25, 2013) - The Sacred Heart men's and women's cross country teams claimed three of the four Northeast Conference Weekly Awards announced on Tuesday afternoon. Graduate student Christopher Connelly (Medford, NY) and senior Brianna Castrogivanni (Commack, NY) were named the NEC Athletes of the Week and freshman Molly Barker (Weymouth, MA) was tabbed the NEC Rookie of the Week.
The Sacred Heart men's cross country team had the top-two finishers led by graduate student Christopher Connelly who took home the individual title at the 36th Annual Father Leeber S.J. Invitational at Fairfield University Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers finished fourth as a team in the six team race. Connelly took home his first career individual title on Saturday, besting the field with a time of 26:07.98. Connelly picks up his second top-five finish in as many races this season. He finished third at this race last season.
Castrogivanni notched her second win of the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon, taking home the individual title at the 37th Annual Father Leeber S.J. Invitational held at Fairfield University. The Pioneers had the top-two finishers in the race and had four runners finish in the top-10 Saturday. Castrogivanni made it two-straight wins on the season, breaking the tape with a time of 18:43.70 on the 5k course. She entered Saturday's race off a win at the Bryant Invitational two weeks ago. Castrogivanni took second place at last year's race with a time of 18:48. She is off to a blazing start to her season with two wins and top-five finishes in all three races.
