Pair of Pioneers Garner NEC Weekly Accolades

FAIRFIELD, CT (September 11, 2013) - The Sacred Heart women's cross country team swept this week's Northeast Conference Weekly Awards with senior Briannia Castrogivanni (Commack, NY) and freshman Jennifer Hahne (Madison, CT) taking home Athlete and Rookie honors.

Castrogivanni finished atop a field of 100 runners at the Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational at Bryant University on Saturday, breaking the tape in 17:53.5 on the 5K course. It marked the first career victory for Castrogivanni. Approaching the two mile mark, Castrogivanni and Emily Durgin of UConn began to separate from the rest of the frontrunners and traded the lead over the next 3/4 of a mile, before Castrogivanni pulled away over the final 400 meters of the race. Her winning time was a new personal best on the Bryant course, and a new meet record as she topped last year's winning time of 18:00.1 by Harvard's Brianna Jackucewicz. In 2012, Castrogivanni ran 18:36.8 at the same event to place 11th. The Commack, NY native missed her 5K cross country personal best of 17:41.73 by less than 12 seconds.

Hahne, running in her first-ever 5K cross country race, ran the 12th fastest freshman time in Sacred Heart program history on Saturday, clocking in at 19:06.9 at the Shawn M. Nassaney Invitational at Bryant University. Hahne finished in 22nd place in a field of 100 runners. Her time puts her just ahead of the 19:08.7 that Brianna Castrogivanni recorded in her 2010 rookie campaign on the SHU Rookie Performance List.
