Aug. 19, 2008
FAIRFIELD, CT - The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team has been picked to finish in fifth place in the Northeast Conference Pre-season Coach's poll released today.
Central Connecticut received four of the nine first-place votes and was picked to finish atop the standings. Defending champion LIU received three votes and was picked second, while Robert Morris got the other two first-place votes and was selected third. FDU was selected for fourth place.
After qualifying for the postseason for the second time in three years, Sacred Heart, 9-20, 3-5 NEC, will seek to maintain that momentum behind second-year head coach Rob Machan. Junior middle blocker Annie Archer (Littleton, CO) returns after finishing her sophomore campaign as the Pioneers' blocking leader (.70 bpg), while also posting their best hitting percentage (.248).
Coming off an exceptional rookie year as the team's leader in points (3.29 ppg), kills (2.84 kpg) and digs (3.11 dpg), sophomore Mydori Saipole (Oxnard, CA) will return in 2008 but will change positions.
Sophomore setter Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek (Santa Barbara, CA) paced the team in assists and stood seventh in the NEC with 8.10 assists per game as a freshman. She will serve as team co-captain along with senior Lynne Principio (Ardsley, NY).
The arrival of four freshmen from California for the new season has generated a lot of excitement in training camp. Brittany Best (Norco, CA), Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA), Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA), and Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) all bring impressive credentials to the Pioneer program.
