WEST POINT, NY - Brianna Stremick led a nearly flawless Army attack with 12 kills as the Black Knights swept the Pioneer women's volleyball team 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-13) Wednesday night. Army made just six errors on attack all night, hitting an impressive .400 in the match.
The Pioneers, now 15-9, were led by freshman Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) and Brittany Best (Norco, CA) with nine kills each. Fellow freshman Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA) led the defense with 12 digs.
An ace by Aurora Appel (Mendham, NJ) had the Pioneers close at 8-6 in the opening set, but Army went on a 12-5 run to open the gap to 20-11 and pull away to easily win the game. In the second set, a kill by junior Annie Archer (Littleton, CO) tied the score at 17-17. The Black Knights, now an impressive 21-3, win eight of the next nine points to take a 2-0 lead.
Another Appel ace in the third set had it tied at 8-8, but Army then ripped off 17 of the last 22 points to close out the match.
SHU will be in action again tomorrow in a Northeast Conference battle at Central Connecticut at 7 pm.
