LORETTO, PA - Sophomore Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) had 13 kills, while fellow sophomore Brittany Best (Norco, CA) had 12 kills and seven digs to lead the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-12) win at Saint Francis (PA) Sunday afternoon. The win was the third straight for the Pioneers and moved them to 14-7 overall and 4-1 in the Northeast Conference.
The sophomore tandem combined for 25 kills and made just three errors in 47 total attempts. In fact, the Pioneers made just ten attack errors the entire match.
The opening set was tied at 20-20 when a SHU service error gave the Red Flash a 21-20 lead. Consecutive kills by freshman Elise Sage (Greenwood Village, CO) and Trimble gave the Pioneers a 22-21 lead and forced Saint Francis to call a timeout.
Out of the break, a Red Flash attack error made it 23-21. Another SHU service error gave Saint Francis life at 23-22, but Sage put the set away with back-to-back kills.
The Pioneers jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the second game before the Red Flash rallied and tied the set at 11-11. The two teams went back and forth and the set was still knotted at 17-17 before the Pioneers exploded. SHU took eight of the next nine points, including the finisher from freshman Johanna Ovsenek (London, Ontario) to take a 2-0 lead.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday night at 7:00 when they host the Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson.
