Final Stats

PROVIDENCE, RI - The Sacred Heart women's volleyball team set a new school Division I record for victories this weekend when it defeated Texas-El Paso and Coppin State in the second day of the Providence Friar Invitational on Saturday and moved to 10-4.

After beating the host school Friday night, SHU faced off against UTEP on Saturday. After losing the first two games, the Pioneers came roaring back to take a 3-2 (15-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-12) victory.

Freshmen Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) and Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) had huge games for SHU. Hetherington had another double double with 17 kills and 11 digs, while Trimble picked up 13 kills and a career-high 20 digs.

With set three tied at 23-23, the Pioneers extended the match by winning two straight points off Aurora Appel (Mendham, NJ) serves. SHU took control of the fourth set at 20-16 on a Brittnay Best (Norco, CA) kill and hung on to take it to a fifth and deciding frame. Appel was again the catalyst for winning the fifth set when the Pioneers led 13-12 and Appel served out the match.

Later in the afternoon, SHU blitzed Coppin State 3-0 (25-7, 25-11, 25-11). Junior Alex Bavasi (Flagstaff, AZ) led the offense with ten kills. The Pioneers made just eight attack errors in the match.
