FAIRFIELD, CT - Freshman Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) finished with a career-high 18 kills and 13 digs to lead the Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-18,25-20) over the University of Hartford Saturday afternoon as part of the SHU Invitational.
The Pioneers, now 3-2 on the season and 2-0 in the Invitational, won the opener 25-21 thanks to seven kills from Hetherington. Sophomore Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek (Santa Barbara, CA) had 13 assists in the set. SHU also registered three service aces in the frame from Hetherington, Kidd-Kadlubek and Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA).
Hartford, 1-5, evened the match up by taking the second game 25-19. The Hawks played excellent defense in the frame, accumulating 23 digs- seven of them from Bettina Woodman.
Sacred Heart roared back in game three to win it 25-18. Hetherington added seven more kills to her ledger (with just two errors) and libero Colberg had seven defensive digs.
The Pioneers closed it out with a 25-20 decision in game four. Freshman Brittany Best (Norco, CA) led the offensive attack in the set with five kills, while Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) had four. SHU made just three attack errors in the frame and hit a blistering .361 as a team.
The Pioneers are undefeated in the tournament (2-0), along with Rider and Bryant University. Hartford and Holy Cross both finished the Invitational 0-3.
Sacred Heart will face Bryant in the final game of the tournament Sunday morning at 10 AM. Following that game, SHU will take on Harvard University in a regular non-conference game.
