FAIRFIELD, CT - Sophomores Brittany Best (Norco, CA) and Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) each recorded double-doubles, while Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA) had a match-high 26 digs to lead the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21) win over the University of Missouri-Kansas City in the Sacred Heart Invitational Saturday morning.
The Pioneers trailed the opening set 19-17 after a Kelsey Knoche kill for the Kangaroos. SHU coach Rob Machan called a timeout and his team went on a 7-1 run after it to take a 24-20 lead. Best put the finishing touch on the frame with her sixth kill.
The second set was tight throughout, neither team ever opening up more than a three-point edge. With the game tied at 23-23 and the Pioneers holding the serve, Knoche came up with a big kill to give the Roos a 24-23 lead. A service ace by Erin Wellwood gave the set to UMKC to even the match.
Set three was another close affair. After the Pioneers opened an early 7-2 lead, UMKC came storming back. In fact, the Kangaroos took a 20-19 lead on a Knoche ace but after a Knoche service error and a couple of points on Ashlyn Trimbles serve, the Pioneers took a 23-20 lead. The Pioneers took the game 25-23 when Knoche committed an attack error on the final point.
The Pioneers had an 11-6 lead in the fourth game after a Trimble kill but the Kangaroos used four straight points on the serve of Christiana McQuin to take a 16-15 lead. Hetherington got the Pioneers the lead at 18-17 with a kill and the Pioneers would ride that to the match win to improve to 4-1 this season.
