TEANECK, N.J. (November 9, 2014)—Sarah Krufka (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) led the match with 18 kills in the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team's sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday afternoon. Junior Katie Direnzo (Shelton, Conn.) posted an errorless match as the Pioneers improve to 9-17 on the season and 4-8 in Northeast Conference play.
The Pioneers got off to a quick start to open the match with help at the service line from Krufka as she served up one of her two service aces on the day. Krufka also led all players with a total of 18 kills in the match. After the Pioneers took a 3-2 lead they would never look back as they led the rest of the set. FDU fought hard to keep it close but with the score tied 14-10 Sacred Heart went on a four point run to put the set nearly out of reach. Try as they might the Knights could not battle their way back into the set as the Pioneers took the opener 25-15.
FDU took the opening points of the second set, but weren't able to hold onto the lead as Sacred Heart chipped away and took the lead 11-10 on a service ace by rookie Makayla Dole (Cypress, Calif.). The teams exchanged points with the Knights eventually holding a four-point lead before back-to-back kills from Dole sparked a five-point SHU run that led the Pioneers to a 19-18 advantage. The score tied again at 19, but broke in Sacred Heart's favor. They held onto the lead all the way to the 25-22 win, which was capped off with a Krufka kill.
Sacred Heart jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the third set, but several SHU errors put the Knights ahead 7-5. FDU held on tight to the lead, but with the Knights at set-point, 24-20, Krufka ignited a four-point run to knot the game at 24. After flip-flopping points, a pair of Knight attack errors gave the Pioneers the match 27-25.
The Pioneers return home to the William H. Pitt Center Thursday, Nov. 13 to host Bryant at 7:00 p.m.
