FAIRFIELD, CONN. (October 12, 2014)—Sarah Krufka (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) led the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Sunday afternoon. The sophomore right side hitter totaled a match-leading 24 kills while hitting .388. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 7-11 this season and 2-3 against Northeast Conference opponents.
SHU came out strong in the first set taking an early 6-3 thinks to strong hitting offense, the Knights came back to tie the game at 15 and move into the lead after a pair of Sacred Heart hitting errors. Alisa Mesa's (Long Beach, Calif.) five-point service run put the Pioneers back on top 21-19. SHU maintained the lead, and a Krufka kill gave Sacred Heart the 25-21 win.
After stumbling in the second set, and FDU taking it 25-15, the Pioneers rebounded in set three with a solid 25-17 win. The Knights took a 4-2 lead early, but that was all they would get as a kill from Mesa tied the score at four and an FDU attack error put the Pioneers ahead. Sacred Heart maintained the lead throughout the set. Back-to-back kills from Katie Direnzo (Shelton, Conn.) and Krufka ended the set.
The final set looked much like the prior one with SHU coming back early and dominating the rest of the way for a 25-17 win.
The Pioneers hit the road next weekend. On Saturday, they travel to Smithfield, R.I. to face Bryant. Then on Sunday, they battle in-state rival Central Connecticut State. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
