Riggs and Robinson Nab NEC Honors in Opening Week
FAIRFIELD, CONN. (Sept. 3 2013)— Two Pioneers picked up Northeast Conference weekly honors, after the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team opened their season 2-1 this weekend. Sophomore Allison Riggs (Anaheim, Calif.) was named the NEC/Molten Co-Player of the Week, and freshman setter Kiki Robinson (Bakersfield, Calif.) got the nod as NEC/Molten Rookie of the Week.
Named to the Crusader Classic All-Tournament team, Riggs hit .500 in a 2-1 weekend for the Pioneers. She notched 27 kills on 44 attempts and recorded just five errors. In a 3-0 win over UMass-Lowell, the sophomore posted a .714 hitting percentage, tallying 10 kills. Over the three matches, Riggs averaged 2.70 kills per set and added three block assists.
Robinson averaged 11.8 assists per set in her first three collegiate matches for Sacred Heart. The Bakersfield, CA native posted a .702 assist percentage while racking up 118 assists to earn a spot on the Crusader Classic All-Tournament Team. An offensive-minded setter, Robinson helped her team to a 2-1 record at the Classic and notched 14 kills on 21 attempts for a .524 attack percentage on the weekend.
The Pioneers host American, Manhattan and UMES this weekend in the annual SHU Hampton Inn Invitational. Sacred Heart takes on American at 4:30 p.m. on Friday to open the tournament.
