Pioneers Drop Second Straight; Fall to CCSU 3-1

Fairfield, Conn.—Despite recording 10 more kills than the Blue Devils (56-46), the Sacred Heart Women's Volleyball Team dropped the match 3-1, and fall to 2-3 in conference and 4-15 overall on the season. The Pioneers' middleblockersJohanna Ovsenek (London, On.) and Elise Sage (Greenwood Village, Colo.) were strong offensively, leading the match with 14 kills each.

The teams exchanged points and the lead throughout the majority of the first set, with the score tying on 12 different occasions. The Pioneers secured a three-point lead, 18-15, but in-state rival Central Connecticut State battled back, tying the score at 19 and 20. The Blue Devils broke the tie with a four-point run to put them at set-point. Sacred Heart wouldn't just lie down as Karly Shockey's (Chino Hills, Calif.) kill gave the Pioneers a spark. But freshman Allison Riggs (Anaheim, Calif.) served the ball into the net giving CCSU the set.

Central Connecticut State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the second set. That lead would only increase. A kill by Makenna Lommori gave the Blue Devils their biggest lead of the set making the score 18-9. The Pioneers only hit .088 in the set and ended up losing 25-18.

Once again, both teams battled for the lead in the beginning of the third set. With the score tied at seven, Sacred Heart went on a 4-2 run highlighted by Alissa Young's (La Verne, Calif.) three kills. However, CCSU came back to tie the score at 11. This time the Pioneers made sure the Blue Devils wouldn't come back, breaking the tie with a 6-3 run giving them a 17-13 lead. The four-point lead grew, giving the SHU the momentum they needed to take the set 25-18.

With the match on the line, the Pioneers outkilled CCSU 14-9 in the fourth set, but could never take the lead. Sacred Heart fought hard, allowing the Blue Devils to take their biggest lead of five points early in the set. SHU eventually worked their way back into the game tying the score at 18. After that, every time CCSU would take a lead, the Pioneers were right behind them, tying the score at 22 and 23. Sacred Heart hurt themselves in the end, giving the Blue Devils the match with a service error and a hitting error.

The Pioneers face the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday on the road at 1:00 p.m.
