Pioneers Beat Virginia Commonwealth in First Day of Spartan Invitational

(East Lansing, MI) – Dianis Mercado (Vega Baja, PR) once again led the Sacred Heart Women's Volleball team with 17 kills, as the Pioneers came from behind to defeat Virginia Commonwealth 3-2 in day one of the Spartan Invitational Friday night.  The Pioneers improve to 9-2 with their fourth consecutive victory.

After winning the first set 25-19, the Pioneers found themselves down after two closely contested sets (25-23 and 25-22).  However, the Pioneers prevailed in the fourth set 25-22, taking the lead on back-to-back service aces by Kimmy Roleder (Pasadena, CA) to take a 16-15 lead.  Roleder finished second for Shu with 16 kills and 10 defensive digs.

 In the final set, the Pioneers took the lead at 14-13 thanks to a VC attack error by Jessica Ojukwu, and sealed a 15-13 win on a block by Johanna Ovsenek (London, ON).

Alissa Young (La Verne, CA) led SHU in kill percentage (.318), with 10 kills in 22 attacks, while Jessica Colberg (Long Beach, CA) starred defensively with 15 digs.

The Pioneers take on Ball State on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., and then close out the day and the tournament by taking on the hosts in Michigan State at 7:30 p.m.
