The Northeast Conference announced the Women's Tennis Preseason Coaches' Poll on Friday with the Sacred Heart Pioneers picked to finish fourth. The Pioneers were tied with Mount St. Mary's for the fourth spot in this season's poll. The league's coaches selected Quinnipiac as the preseason favorite.
Sacred Heart picked up a conference-high 12 wins last season while returning to the NEC semifinal round for the fourth time in five years. Head coach Mike Guastelle has put together a balanced roster that should allow the Pioneers to contend once again. Sophomores Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA/Barnstable) and Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO/Cherry Creek) combined for 27 overall victories as rookies. The former stepped right into the top singles spot where she won seven times in dual match play. Junior Darcy Demers (Norton, MA/Bishop Feehan) and senior Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ/Wall) have each averaged double-digit win totals in each of the past two seasons.
Mercer County Park will again provide a venue for the Northeast Conference Tennis Championships for the 10th year running. The NEC will crown its 23rd women's team champion from April 16-18 at the 28-court facility, which features six recently-constructed indoor courts.
