FAIRFIELD, Conn. (October 19, 2009) - Sacred Heart senior Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ) and junior Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) posted 4-0 records over the weekend at the rain shortned New England Championships. The duo advanced to the finals of the Flight "2" singles draw and the Flight "1" double draw while the team of sophomore Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and freshman Rebecca McMullin (Brighton Victoria, Australia) won the Flight "2" doubles title.
Kasinow and Demer both advanced through the #2 singles bracket to the the finals. Kasinow posted an 8-1 win over Holy Cross's Carolyn Chandley and an 8-5 win over Providence's Ayushi Sinha in the semifinal round. Demers beat Hartford's Haley Gileau, 8-0, and defeated Kristen Liu from Fairfield in the semi's, 8-4.
The duo teamed up for a pair of wins in the #1 doubles bracket as well. They posted an 8-2 win over Bryant's Morganne Downing and Katie Francazio and advanced to the finals with an 8-4 win over Merrimack's Cristina Lucin and Caitlin Dunn. On the other side of the bracket, junior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) and sophomore Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) also advanced to the finals. The duo opened with an 8-0 win over Kristen Meahl and Chandley from Holy Cross and then posted a 9-7 win over Providence's Paulina Rys and Liu from Fairfield.
In the #2 doubles bracket, Donnelly and McMullin opened with an 8-1 win over Providence's Jenn Cusack and Courtney Burek. They advanced to the final by beating Emily Marr and Ivette Konopka of Holy Cross, 8-1. The duo notched the title 8-4 beating Fairfield's Dana Postupack and Tara Brennan.
At #4 singles, sophomore Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) advanced to the finals with an 8-3 win over Hailee Lange of Holy Cross and a 9-7 win over Dana Tausek of Bryant. The title match with Ruiz of Fairfield couldn't be contested due to the rain. At #3 singles, Harrington won her opening match 8-4 over Amanda Carroll of Merrimack but lost in the semi's, 8-4, to Nicolette Jackson.
The Pioneers close out the fall portion of their schedule this weekend at the ITA Regional Championship at Yale University.
