The Sacred Heart women's tennis team took part in the Quinnipiac Invitational over the weekend with a pair of Pioneers and a doubles pairing advancing to the seminfinal round of the tournament. Freshman Rebecca McMullin (Brighton Victoria, Australia) and sophomore Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) both advanced into the semifinals in their respective singles flights while the team of sophomore Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) and junior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) advanced to the semifinals of their doubles flight.
McMullin, making her collegiate singles debut at the weekend tournament, notched a pair of wins in the Singles "B" flight. McMullin opened with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 win over Rhode Island's Tristany Leikem and moved into the semifinals of the flight thanks to a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Courtney Kilarski of Seton Hall. McMullin missed out on a spot in the finals after falling to Quinnipiac's Adrienne Markison, 6-1, 7-5.
Downing made her semifinal run in the "D" Singles flight, opening with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Alexander Harvey of Seton Hall. Downing beat URI's Jenna Williams in the quarterfinal round in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. She came up short in her bid for a finals apperance, falling to UConn's Julie Adams, 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles action, Chao and Harrington picked up a pair of wins in the "B" flight. The duo opened with an 8-2 win over Quinnipiac's Carly Loewenstein and Ali Warshavsky. They moved into the semifinal round with an 8-3 win over Fairfield's Gretchen Amberg and Michaela Cerrone before falling to URI's Amanda Barletta and Pam Emery, 8-2.
In the "A" Doubles flight, sophomore Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and McMullin won their opening match, beating Fordham's Bethany Boyle and Taylor Holt, 8-6. The duo were beaten in the quarterfinal round by QU's Mary Wilson and Rachel Cantor, 8-2. In "B" Doubles flight Dowining teamed with senior Ashley Amalfe (Clark, NJ) to win their opening match, 8-6, over Fordham's Brittney Russell and Jennifer Mullen. They dropped their quarterfinal round match to Qunnipiac's Natalie Duckor and Lisanne Steinert, 8-6.
On the Consolation side of the tournament bracket, the Pioneers got wins from junior Darcy Demers (Norton, MA), senior Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ), Harrington and Chao. Demers and Kasinow teamed to beat Fordham's Martina Featherstone and Sarah Tremaine, 8-3 in the "A" Doubles consolation bracket. Demers also notched a singles win in the "A" consolation, beating Pam Emery of Rhode Island 8-1.
Harrington notched a "B" consolation win over Fordham's Featherston, 9-7, while Chao bead Mullen, 8-5, in the "C" bracket.
The Pioneers are back in action on Friday and Saturday, September 25th and 26th, at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships being held at Army in West Point, NY.
