Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team won the doubles point and came within won set of knocking off Long Island University but ultimately fell, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers now sit at 6-5 on the season.
SHU got off to a good start by winning the doubles point. After losing the first match, Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) and Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ) won the number two doubles, 8-4 and Elizabeth Harrington (Needham, MA) and Kristina Chao (Westerly, RI) prevailed in the third match, 8-5, to win the point for the Pioneers.
Long Island's Selma Babic and Ashley Harvey won the top two singles matches in fairly convincing fashion. Kasinow won a hard fought two-setter at number three, holding off H'Ann Johnson 7-5, 4-6, 10-6. Stephanie Elle took home a 7-4, 7-6 win at number five and Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) answered with a 6-2, 6-3 win in the six hole. The match came down to a three set marathon between Harrington and Dara Lahens. Harrington won the first set but Lahens stormed back to win the next two sets and win the match, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The Pioneers are back in action Saturday when they visit Hartford. In a change to beat out forecast rain showers, matches will start at 11:00 AM.
