ORLANDO, Fla. - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team opened up their Florida Spring Break trip by beating the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 6-1. The Pioneers fell to the Creighton Blue Jays, 6-1 and will wrap up their trip facing Radford on Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) posted a pair of singles wins and a doubles win over the two matches. Harrington beat SDSU's Megan McDougall, 6-4, 6-4 at #3 singles and teamed with sophomore Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) for an 8-4 win over Bryna Nasenbeny and Bethany Goeden at #1 doubles in the win over the Jackrabbits. In the loss to Creighton, Harrington earned the Pioneer's only point beating Kelsey Schmidt, 7-5, 6-4.
Chao won her #4 singles match beating Carrie Jansen, 6-3, 6-1. Junior Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) beat Caitlin Brannen at #2, 6-1, 6-0 and senior Julianne Kasinow (Wall, NJ) won her #5 singles match over Nellie Bloomberg after dropping the first set, 6-3. She bounced back with a 6-0, 10-3 win. Sophomore Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) wrapped up singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Molly Johnson at #6.
Downing and fellow sophomore Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) teamed for a win at #2 doubles, beating McDougall and Brannen, 8-3. SHU swept the doubles matches with Kasinow and senior Ashley Amalfe (Clark, NJ) winning at #3 9-7 over Jansen and Katie Elifson.
