NEW HAVEN, Conn. (January 31, 2010) - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team opened up their spring season over the weekend with a comeback 4-3 win over NJIT. The Pioneers notched a pair of three set comeback wins to earn the program's first victory over the Highlanders. SHU is now 3-2 in dual match play this season.
The Pioneers opened by taking the doubles point, winning at #2 and #3. The team of junior Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI) and sophomore Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) beat Anine Lovdal and Anna Lidon 8-5 at second doubles. Sophomore Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA) and freshman Rebecca McMullin (Brighton Victoria, Australia) were winner at third doubles beating Fanny Aizier and Dads Stanimirovic, 8-4.
Chao clinched the win for the Pioneers at #6 singles, beating Stanimirovic, 7-6 (3) and 7-5. McMullin dropped the first set in her #1 singles match against Lovdal, 6-2, but rebounded with a 6-1, 6-0 win to take the match.
Donnelly earned SHU's other singles win, also in comeback fashion. Donnelly came up short in the first set, 6-3, to Lidon at #3 singles. She battled back to post 6-3 and 6-1 wins to seal the win.
SHU return to action on February 6th as they head to West Point, NY to take on the Army Black Knights.
