FAIRFIELD, Conn – The Sacred Heart women's tennis team was slotted fourth in the Northeast Conference Championships to be held this weekend at the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, New Jersey. The Pioneers will take on fifth seeded Saint Francis University on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
The Pioneers are 2-2 in the Northeast Conference this season, with wins over Saint Francis University and Robert Morris. SHU defeated SFU, 5-2, on February 22nd. Sophomore Katie DeRienzo (Douglaston, NY), senior Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ), sophomore Paige Olson (Sykesville, MD), junior Nicole Rydzewski (Maspeth, NY) and freshman Taylor Gurda (Middletown, NY) all notched wins as the Pioneers took five of six singles matches.
Sacred Heart has been led by DeRienzo, who leads the team with a 12-6 singles record in dual matches this season, including a 3-1 record in NEC matches. DeRienzo is 11-6 at number one singles this season and has won six of her last seven matches at the top spot. Rydzewski has also been stellar for head coach Mike Guastelle, notching an 11-6 dual match record. Kaldan is 3-0 against NEC teams this season.
The Pioneers still have two matches left before they head to New Jersey. SHU takes on Fairfield today, and then welcomes the Rhode Island Rams to town on Tuesday afternoon.
