PROVIDENCE, RI – The Sacred Heart Women's tennis team used the momentum from sweeping all three doubles matches to defeat the Providence Friars, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon in Rhode Island. The Pioneers improve to 6-10 on the season.
The Pioneers got things started by sweeping the doubles point for just the second time all season. At number one doubles, Lindsey Post (Danbury, CT) and Paige Olson (Sykesville, MD) were 8-6 victors, while Katie DeRienzo (Douglaston, NY) and Nicole Rydzewski (Maspeth, NY) defeated Alana Prinos and Hannah Zangari, 8-5, at number two. At the third spot, Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ) and Taylor Gurda (Middletown, NY) earned a 8-4 win over Amanda Pitocco and Jennifer DeLuca.
Rydzewski, Gurda, and DeRienzo all followed with wins in singles, with DeRienzo clinching the victory with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at number one singles over Maria Clara Bernardez. Rydzewski earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hannah Zangari at number five singles, while Gurda defeated Olivia Hogan, 6-0, 7-5 at number six.
The Pioneers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Hartford Hawks come to town.
