The Sacred Heart women's tennis team played host to the 2010 New England Championship tournament over the weekend. Seniors Elizabeth Harrington (Westerly, RI), juniors Kate Donnelly (Centerville, MA), Kristina Chao (Needham, MA) and Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) and freshman Gabi Kalden (New Brunswick, NJ) all advanced to the semifinal round of their singles draws while senior Darcy Demers (Norton, MA) won her singles consolation bracket.
In the #1 singles bracket, Donnelly defeated Jen Learmonth from UConn, 6-0, 7-5 in her first match. Donnelly lost to Bryant's Claudia Hidalgo in the semi's 6-2, 6-1. She would go on to lose a hard fought third place match to Fairfield's Monica Yajima, 9-7.
Harrington won her #2 singles opening match against Katina Zampas of Hartford, 6-0, 6-4 but fell in the semifinal round to Lucy Bird of Bryant, 6-1, 1-6 (10-7). Kalden won her first match in the same bracket beating M.C. Bernardez of Providence, 6-2, 6-4 before falling to UConn's Emily Herb, 6-3, 6-3. Harrington and Kalden did not contest the third place match.
Demers rebounded from an opening 6-2, 6-0 loss to Sharissa Ryan of Fairfield to take her next two matches. Demers beat Merrimack's Alyx Barnes, 8-1 and Providence College's Ayushi Sinha, 8-4.
In the #4 singles bracket, Dowing won her opening match 6-2, 6-1 over Mollie Fitzgerald of Merrimack but lost to May Vickers of Bryant, 6-0, 6-0. Chao, playing in the same draw, beat Alyssa Ruiz of Fairfield, 7-5, 2-6 (10-4) and lost to Lauren Wilmarth of UConn in the semi's. The duo did not contest the third place match.
In the #1 doubles draw, Donnelly and Harrington beat teammates Kalden and Demers 8-5 in the consolation bracket while Downing and Chao won at the #2 doubles consolation, 8-0 over Ruiz and Liu of Fairfield.
