Pioneers Win Nine Events in Win Over Manhattan

NEW YORK, N.Y. (January 25, 2014)—The Sacred Heart women's swim team won nine events en route to defeating the Manhattan Jaspers 118-85. 

The Pioneers excelled in the 100 yard Butterfly and the 100 yard Breaststroke, taking first, second and third in both events. Lizzy Bennett (Fairbanks, Alaska) finished first in the 100 yard Butterfly in 1:03.46 with teammates  Siobhan Goodman (Ridgewood, N.J.) (1:03.54) and Caleigh Dion (Dunstable, Mass.) (1:03.86) close behind her. Junior Malvina Reinhold (Gothenburg, Sweden) took first place in the 100 yard Breaststroke, while freshmen Julia Pedersen (Washington Township, N.J.) and Kristina Dy (Matawan, N.J.) finished second and third respectively.

Bennett and Reinhold accounted for four of Sacred Heart's nine wins. In addition to their previously mentioned first place finishes, Bennett also too the top spot in the 200 yard Individual Medley (2:20.64), and Reinhold won the 1000 yard Freestyle (11:31.89).

Three rookies snagged the Pioneers' three other individual wins. Jillian Crosby (Port Monmouth, N.J.) took first place swimming the 200 yard Freestyle in 2:04.19, while classmate Dion beat out the competition swimming the 50 yard Freestyle in 26.03 seconds. Olivia Decas (Mattaposiett, Mass.) rounded out the trio finishing first in the 100 yard Backstroke in 1:03.05.

Sacred Heart took first in both relays. The team of Decas, Reinhold, Bennett and Crosby swam the 200 yard Medley Relay in 1:54.38 to open the meet with a win, and Crosby, Dion, Alyssa Farnsworth (Leominster, Mass.) and Decas finished strong winning the 200 yard Freestyle Medley (1:43.81) to close the meet.

The Pioneers take on Northeast Conference rivals Central Connecticut State and St. Francis Brooklyn in a trimeet this Saturday in New Britain, Conn.
