Pioneer Make a Splash at St. Francis Brooklyn; Defeat Terriers 111-93

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (October 11, 2013)—The Sacred Heart women's swimming team picked up a big win in the season opener Friday night as the Pioneers took down the Terriers 111-93. SHU racked up first place finishes in seven events throughout the meet.

Five different swimmers clinched first in the individual events. Olivia Decas (Mattaposiett, Mass.) swam the 50 yard Freestyle in 25.76 beating out the competition with teammates Caleigh Dion (Dunstable, Mass.) and Alyssa Farnsworth (Leominster, Mass.) close behind her for second and third place finishes. Senior Lizzy Bennett (Fairbanks, Ak.) snagged her first place finish in the 200 yard Individual Medley swimming the event in 2:17.93. Jillian Crosby (Port Monmouth, N.J.) captured first by swimming the 100 yard Freestyle in 55.47 seconds, while Meredith Nyser (Barrington, R.I.) beat out teammate Hayley McGill (Old Lyme, Conn.) by less than a second to win the 100 yard Backstroke. Junior Malvina Reinhold was the only SHU swimmer to finish in the top three in the 100 yard Breaststroke, taking first place in 1:10.02.

Sacred Heart won both relays on Friday. The team of Crosby, Dion, Farnsworth and Decas took the 200 yard Freestyle Relay in 1:43.74, while McGill, Reinhold, Bennett and Crosby teamed up to win the 200 yard Medley Relay in 1:52.53. 

The Pioneers hope to make a splash next weekend at the New England Catholic Invitational at Boston College.
