CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Sacred Heart University swimming team finished off the first day of competition at the Northeast Conference Championship at MIT in seventh place with 61 points. The Pioneers 400 yard medley relay team of sophomore Meg Bellamy (Barrington, R.I.), junior Laurie Casado (Queens, N.Y.), senior Katie Marshall (Cumberland, R.I.), and sophomore Rachel McGrath (Dorchester, R.I.) set a new school record by coming in fourth at 4:02.37.
Bellamy, Casado, sophomore Stephanie Walters (Wanaque, N.Y.), and McGrath set a season-best time in the 200 freestyle relay as McGrath his the wall in 1:43.24.
Through six scored events, Central Connecticut held the lead after day one with 244 points, followed closely by Saint Francis (PA) at 223.
In the 200 yard individual medley finals, junior Meghan Bailey (Walpole, Mass.) scored for SHU with a season best time of 2:12.01.
Friday's competition gets underway with the 200 medley relay, followed by the 400 individual medley and 100 butterfly. The 200 and 800 freestyle as well as the 100 breaststroke and backstroke will also be included in Friday's meet.
