Fairfield, CT-The Sacred Heart softball team will make its debut in the NCAA Tournament against third ranked Washington. The Pioneers will compete in the Amherst regional as they are joined by UMass and Cornell. Each regional will be double elimination with one team advancing to the super regional, first round games are scheduled to begin Friday May 15.
Sacred Heart (25-26) is making its first appearance in the big dance after winning the NEC Championship Saturday in Queens, NY. Washington (41-10) must make the long trip east as the high seed due to NCAA travel regional and travel requirements.
Pioneer ace Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) who allowed just two earned runs in the NEC tournament will match up against Washington's Danielle Lawrie. Lawrie sports a 0.76 ERA in 2009 and no hit two national powers, Arizona and UCLA.
Washington finished the regular season second in the Pac-10 conference. Sacred Heart and Washington will kick off play in the Amherst regional at 5:00 pm on Friday. Second round games will be played Saturday to determine who will meet in the regional finals on Sunday.
