Hanover, NH- The Pioneers dropped two games to the Big Green of Dartmouth in a double header in Hanover, NH Wednesday afternoon. Sacred Heart’s game one comeback fell just short as Dartmouth held on for an 8-5 victory. SHU got a homerun from Adrian Fitzsimon (Sacramento, CA) in game two but fell 9-1 in six innings.
Kylie Abrams (Thousand Oaks, CA) made her second start of the year for Sacred Heart (9-20) in Wednesday's opening game. Abrams threw five innings and allowed six earned runs on nine hits. The Pioneers would strike first on a Taylor Froelich (Garden Grove, CA) RBI single. Dartmouth would rally for six unanswered runs while the Pioneers got an unearned run in the fifth to put the score at 6-2, Big Green.
Dartmouth put up two more runs in its half of the fifth and chased Abrams from the mound. The Pioneers, down 8-2, scraped together three runs in the sixth inning in an attempt to get back into the ball game. SHU got its runs on an Amanda Bradley (Langley, BC) RBI single and a Betsy Harvey (Unionville, CT) two-run blast. But the Dartmouth starter would finish the game without any more trouble as Sacred Heart fell 8-5.
The Sacred Heart offense was not nearly as productive in game two as it managed just one hit against Dartmouth starter Kat Hicks. Dartmouth picked up right where it left off in game one building a 5-0 advantage after just two innings. The one Pioneer hit was a Fitzsimon homerun to right in the bottom of the sixth. The Big Green used back to back singles after loading the bases in its half of the sixth frame to bring its lead to 9-1 and end the game.
The SHU softball team will now return home to the friendly confines of Pioneer Park for a big weekend of Northeast Conference action. The Pioneers take on the Wagner Seahawks on Friday and the Blackbirds of Long Island University on Saturday. The first pitch of both double headers is set for 1:00 pm.
