Taylor Froelich (Garden Grove, CA) launched three homers but Sacred Heart was unable to hold on to a late game one lead and was eventually swept in Saturday’s softball double header with Saint Francis (PA). The Pioneers had offense but still fell 8-7 in game one and 5-2 in game two in Loretto, PA.
The Red Flash (3-3 NEC) jumped on the Pioneers early scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Pioneers committed three of their five errors of the game in that inning to put themselves in the early hole. Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) went on to pitch six and two thirds innings and allowing eight runs, though only one was earned.
Sacred Heart (4-2 NEC) came roaring back in the fourth and with the help of some Saint Francis miscues took the lead 6-5. The rally was highlighted by homeruns from Adrian Fitzsimon (Sacramento, CA) and Froelich. After extending the lead to 7-5 on Froelich’s second dinger of the game the Pioneers seemed to be poised to win their fifth straight conference game heading into the bottom of the seventh. But the Pioneer defense committed two errors and the Red Flash pushed across three runs, capped by a Rugani walk-off single, to steal the 8-7 victory.
Sacred Heart jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game two on an RBI single from Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA), who went 3 for 6 at the plate on the day. Game two starter Liz Tsipuras (Simi Valley, CA) would not be able to hold the lead and allowed five runs between the second and third innings and Saint Franics built a 5-1 lead. Froelich homered for the third time in the double header in the top of the seventh but the Red Flash would hold on to win 5-2.
The Pioneers return to action tomorrow afternoon as they go to Moon Township, PA for a doubleheader with Robert Morris. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm.
