Softball Inks Two For 2011 Season

Fairfield, CT - Co-Head Coaches Elizabeth Luckie and Pam London announced the signing of Natinal Letters of Intent for two players who will join the Pioneers in 2011. Jade Bowins (Frederick, MD) and Melissa Mankey (La Palma, CA) recently decided they will play their collegiate careers for Sacred Heart. Bowins is a center fielder by trade who has speed and can also play either corner outfield position. Mankey is a versatile player who could play third base, second base, and catch.
Bowins has played four years on the varsity softball team at Governor Thomas Johnson High School in Frederick, Maryland. In 2008 and 2009, she was selected to the All-Area first team. Bowins was named high school MVP in 2008 and earned Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2009 with a .548 batting average while striking out just once the entire season. In her travel career Bowins has played eight seasons with the Maryland Heartbreakers. This season she batted .338 and stole an impressive 29 bases. Outisde of softball she has also lettered in both track and volleyball. Bowins is a member of the Nationial Honor Society and performed in two high school musicals.
Mankey has had great success at both the high school and travel levels. On the travel circuit Mankey plays for the Riptide Gold and compiled a .395 batting average with 21 doubles and nine triples in her most recent season. She will also bring speed to the SHU roster, posting 49 stolen bases a year ago. In 2008, the Riptide Gold finished in third place at the Western Nationals. In high school Mankey won a golden glove award in the 2009 season. Her team finished the 2008 season winning the Empire League and earning a spot in the CIF playoffs. Mankey's squad achieved the same honor in 2007 and finished the CIF playoffs as a semi-finalist.
Co-Head Coach Pam London commented on the newest addition to the Sacred Heart program, "Both of these ladies bring us a dimension of speed. They are aggressive and smart base runners that thrive on making things happen. They are table setters, run scorers, and are very solid on the defensive side of the ball. I look for both Jade and Melissa to be contributors as freshman in some way, shape, or form."
