Loretto, PA - Senior Jacqui Riley (Burlington, MA) and sophomore Amanda Bradley (Langely, BC) each had ninth-inning game winning hits and junior Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) struck out 14 batters in a complete game win as Sacred Heart swept Saint Francis, 3-2 and 6-4, in a Northeast Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
In Game 1, Sacred Heart jumped out 2-0 on sacrifice flys by Bradley and Spehar. However, Saint Francis tied it up with a run in the sixth and another off a Nicole Bender home run in the seventh inning to force extra innings.
Riley's game winning homerun was a shot to centerfield, coming with one out and nobody on in the ninth.
The Red Flash managed to take advantage of two walks to score three runs in the first inning of Game 2. They got just one hit in the inning, but scored their runs off two groundouts and a fielder's choice.
Sophomore Nicole Waligora (Johnstown, Pa. / Westmont Hilltop) plated another run with an RBI single in the third inning to make it 4-0.
A walk and an error led to four unearned runs for Sacred Heart in the fourth inning as it tied the game at 4-4. Freshman Adrian Fitzsimon (Sacramento, CA) had the big blow to tie the game with a three-run double.
Bradley plated two runs with a single in the ninth inning to give the Pioneers the 6-4 lead. Senior Danielle Mellin (La Canda, CA) pitched six scoreless innings in relief to earn her second straight victory.
The Pioneers close out the season with a doubleheader at Monmouth Sunday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
