The Pioneer softball team extended its winning streak to nine games Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 triumph over future NEC member Bryant. Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) closed out the regular season with another great performance scattering four hits and allowing just one earned run in the complete game win. Taylor Froelich (Garden Grove,CA) scored twice and went 2-4 for Sacred Heart in the leadoff spot.
Sacred Heart (22-26) manufacutured a run in the top of the first as Froelich led off the game with a double. Jessica Perez (Santa Maria, CA) laid down her 11th sacrifice of the season to move Froelich to third and Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) brought her home with a sacrifice fly that made it a 1-0 game. Bryant (11-31) responded with two runs in their half of the first as they scored both runs on a single from Anne Dobmeier to take a 2-1 lead.
The Pioneers would even the game in the fourth off the bat of Alyssa Garza (Santa Clarita, CA) to bring home Adrian Fitzsimon (Sacramento, CA) who doubled earlier in the frame. Betsy Harvey (Unionville, CT) provided the go-ahead run with an RBI single to drive in Froelich in the fifth. Russell would not need anymore insurance as she tossed her 24th complete game of the year and lowered her ERA to 1.57 as the Pioneers earned the 3-2 victory.
Sacred Heart will be riding its nine game winning streak into the NEC tournament which is set to begin Friday May 8. The Pioneers will know their opponent after today’s makeup doubleheader between Robert Morris and Quinnipiac.
