Fairfield, CT - Sophomore Betsy Harvey (Unionville, CT) had the game winning double, and junior Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) tossed a complete game three hitter to lead Sacred Heart to a 3-1 win over Iona in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Pioneer Park. Junior Becky Riccitelli struck out 13 Pioneers in the second game to help Iona salvage a spilt of the twin-bill with a 3-0 win in the nightcap.
Iona jumped out in front with a home run by Valerie Laschen in the top of the first inning of game one. However, Spehar silenced the Gaels' bats from then on, striking out six to earn her team leading ninth win of the season.
SHU had chances to score in the early innings but could not get a clutch hit until the fifth inning. Freshman Jill Iazetta (Linden, NJ) led off with a double and was followed by Jessica Perez (Santa Maria, CA) who reached on an error by shortstop Courtney Christie. Spehar then singled, brining home pinch runner Sarah Stack (Fall River, MA). Two batters later, Harvey came up and crushed a pitch from Lauren Spohn to deep centerfield that bounced off the fence. Harvey ended up with a bases-clearing double and the Pioneers had a 3-1 lead that they would never relinquish.
The Gaels built their three run lead in the second game with single runs in the first, fifth and sixth innings. Laura Stott had an RBI single in the first, Christie ripped an RBI double in the fifth and then Angie Ortiz deposited a homerun to lead off the sixth inning to account for all the offense.
Riccitelli was dominant at times to earn her seventh win of the year. At one point, she struck out five in a row and eight out of eleven batters. Harvey was the only Pioneer to solve Ricatelli, as she had three hits in the loss.
The Pioneers are back in action Thursday when they play a doubleheader at Stony Brook. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
