Fairfield, CT - The Sacred Heart softball team dropped an 8-0 decision on the road to cross-town rival Fairfield University this afternoon. The Stags pushed across seven unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the win via the run rule. On the mound junior Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) is now tied on the all-time Sacred Heart list for strikeouts at the Division I level with 416.
Sacred Heart (18-22) got a leadoff hit from Taylor Froelich (Garden Grove, CA) to start the game but would eventually strand her at second base. Pioneer starter Russell finished allowing only one earned run through 4.2 innings, striking out two Stags.
Fairfield (20-14) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after the Stags put together a walk, stolen base, and two-out single. Carley Rudloff (Thousand Oaks, CA) and Shannon McCoy (Yorba Linda, CA) had back-to-back hits in the SHU second. Rudloff advanced on a sacrifice fly to put runners at the corners. The Pioneers sent McCoy from first to attempt a double steal but Rudloff was eventually cut down at the plate to keep SHU off the scoreboard.
After a Sacred Heart error in the bottom of the fifth six straight batters reached safely to plate seven unearned runs and force the game to end at 8-0 with two outs in the inning.
The Pioneers return to action at home this weekend in a Northeast Conference double header against Fairleigh Dickinson. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
