Mezzanotte's Bat Leads SHU to Sweep of Siena

Loudonville, NY - Senior Melissa Mezzanotte (North Haven, CT) hit two homeruns and Sacred Heart rode strong pitching to a doubleheader sweep of Siena, 1-0 and 6-3, in softball action Tuesday in Loudonville.

Game one went scoreless through five innings until Mezzanotte hit a solo shot to centerfield. The one run was all Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) needed to earn the win. She pitched the complete game shutout, giving up just four hits. while striking out seven.

In game two, Siena jumped on the scoreboard in the 2nd inning when Jamie Piela scored on a wild pitch and Stacie Sueda followed with an RBI-single, plating Olivia Calcagnini.

Mezzanotte responded for Sacred Heart in the third with a two-run homer. Her two home runs against the Saints were the first two of the season.

Mezzanotte struck again in the fifth when she hit an RBI single scoring Spehar. Sophomore Adrian Fitzsimon (Sacramento, CA) tacked on another run with an RBI single that scored Mezanotte. Shannon McCoy (Yorba Linda, CA) completed the three-run inning for the Pioneers with another RBI single that brought in Fitzsimon.

Freshman Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) helped herself in the sixth with an RBI-single that scored Jessica Perez (Santa Maria, CA) and gave Sacred Heart a 6-2 lead.

Siena cut the margin in the seventh with an RBI-single off the bat of Lauren Weingart, but the Pioneers held on for the win.

Russell earned the complete game win, allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits. She struck out six.

The Pioneers are back in action when Thursday when they host Seton Hall. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:00 pm.
