Box Score

Staten Island, NY - Senior Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) and freshman Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) each hit homeruns in a seven run sixth inning and Jen Russell (Seymour, CT) struck out the potential go ahead run at the plate for the final out of the game as Sacred Heart held on for an 8-7 win over Wagner in the second game of a softball doubleheader Sunday at Lower Athletic Field. Wagner won the first game, 3-0, behind the strong pitching of Kate Eshleman.

After falling behind 4-1 in the second game, the Pioneer offense came to life in the sixth inning. After three straight singles to start the inning Lee came up and launched a grand slam home run down the left field line to give the Pioneers the lead. SHU wasn't done, however, as Shannon McCoy (Yorba Linda, CA) ripped a double and Jasmin Vicente (Wantagh, NY) walked. Spehar followed with her second home run of the season to cap off the big inning.

Russell, who struck out six to earn her tenth win of the season, allowed three runs in the seventh ininng and faced Amy Iwicki as the potential winning run at the plate with two outs and a runner on second. However, Russell won the battle, striking out Iwicki to seal the victory for the Pioneers.

In the first game, Eshleman struck out seven Pioneers while scattering seven hits and earning the victory. Andrea Lazzari was the key player offensively, driving in all three Seahawk runs.

The Pioneers visit Siena in non-conference action Tuesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:00 pm.
