STATEN ISLAND, NY (April 16) - The Sacred Heart University softball team was swept by NEC rivals Wagner by the scores of 4-2 and 6-5 in conference action Saturday afternoon.
Wagner took game one with a big first inning. After the Pioneers scratched across an unearned run in the top of the frame, the Seahawks responded by scoring three of their own on a Kim Bruckner three run homer to put Wagner up 3-1.
The Seahawks would retain the two-run lead until the top of the fourth inning, when Tiffanie Cross-Monzo (Thousand Oaks, CA) hit a solo shot to lead off the inning to get SHU to within a run, but that would be all the offense the Pioneers could muster as Wagner salted the game away scoring in the bottom of the sixth to win 4-2.
Sacred Heart would once again take an early lead, this time in the top of the second in the second game. Becky Cameron (Girard, OH) doubled home Heather Gutkes (Newport, RI) for the first SHU run of the game. After holding Wagner off the board in the bottom half of the inning the Pioneers increased their lead with a big four-run third inning.
Wagner responded in the bottom of the inning, reclaiming three runs to cut the SHU lead to 5-3. The Seahawks would complete the rally scoring once in the fifth, and twice in the sixth go come all the way back for a 6-5 victory.
The losses drop SHU's record to 8-14 (2-4 NEC) on the season. The Pioneers return to action on Monday, April 18th when they host cross-state rivals Quinnipiac at Pioneer park for two games. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM
