HACKENSACK, NJ - The Sacred Heart University softball team was swept in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Fairleigh Dickenson. The Pioneers fell by scores of 2-1 and 5-2 as they dropped to 9-24 on the season, including a 6-10 Northeast Conference record.
After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning SHU tied the game when senior Leslie Konsig (Millburn, NJ) scored on a passed ball in the top of the sixth inning. The Knights answered in the bottom of the seventh when Serena Larsen hit a two-out walk-off homerun as a pinch hitter.
Nicole Webb pitched a complete game for the Knights, allowing four hits and one earned run while and striking out six in recording her seventh win of the season. Freshman Danielle Mellin (La Canada, CA) allowed four hits and one earned run in 6.2 innings with six strikeouts in taking the loss.
In the second game the Knights (11-23, 8-8 NEC) exploded for a four-run third inning, which was capped off when Jessi Potter hit a two-run single to right field. The Pioneers answered in the top of the fourth with a solo shot from Carroll, her second homer in as many days, that just made it inside the left field foul pole.
FDU answered with a run in the fifth inning when Kimberly Farhat scored on an error by the Pioneers. Sacred Heart picked up one more in the sixth, but the Knights were able to hold them scoreless in the seventh for the final 5-2.
Jennifer Buehler pitched a complete game for Fairleigh Dickinson, allowing two earned runs on four hits in picking up the win. Freshman Bethany Lemenager (New Bedford, MA) took the loss for SHU.
The Pioneers return to action when they host Siena in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 20th, that is scheduled to start at 3:00 pm from Pioneer Park.
