Fairfield, CT - Freshman Sarah Minice threw a four-hit, complete game shutout, striking out ten batters to lead Fairfield to a 2-0 victory over Sacred Heart in softball action Wednesday at Pioneer Park.
The Stags built single runs in the second and seventh innings. In the second, Breanne Morschauser ripped a double to the gap in right center and then advanced to third when Betsy Harvey (Unionville, CT) made a throwing error on a relay throw to second. The next batter was Kris D'Alessandro and she singled and Morschauser scored what turned out to be an unearned run. Fairfield tacked on a run in the seventh when Julia Jacoby doubled to the gap in right center and Riannon Thomas drove her in with an RBI single.
Minice outduled the Pioneers combination of Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) and Jen Russell (Seymour, CT). Minice worked out of three big jams in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. In the fourth Melissa Mezzanotte (North Haven, CT) ripped a lead-off triple to the fence, but Minice struck out the side, leaving Mezzanotte on third. In the sixth and seventh innings, the Pioneers had runners on second and third with two out but Minice got Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) and Russell to ground out to end the game.
Spehar allowed just one unearned run and five hits in five innings, striking out five batters. Russell came in relief to allow one run and one hit, while striking out two.
The Pioneers return to NEC action Saturday when they visit Long Island University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 pm.
