New Haven, CT - Holly Gutterud and KR Ling combined on a three-hitter as Yale topped Sacred Heart 5-2 in the first game of a non-league doubleheader at Dewitt Family Field. The Bulldogs rallied from a 2-1 deficit by scoring four times in the fifth inning. In the second game, Christina Guerland had two hits to lead Yale to a 3-1 victory.

In the opener, Gutterud pitched six innings and struck out to three to improve to 4-0 on the season. After yielding two unearned runs in the second, including, an RBI single by freshman Jill Iazetta (Linden, NJ), she retired eight straight hitters. Gutterud walked Iazetta to open the seventh inning and was replaced by Ling, who retired the next three hitters to earn the save.

Trailing 2-0, the Bulldogs started their comeback with a run in the third. Courtney Blachford drew a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on Guerland's groundout. Kyli Hanson followed with an RBI single to right field.

Ashley Sloan started the winning rally in the fifth with a bunt single. After Guerland walked, Hanson advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Katie Edwards was intentionally walked to load the bases. Pinch hitter Aracelis Torres followed with a run-scoring single to right. Gutterud then hit a fly ball that was misplayed by left-fielder Sarah Stack (Fall River, MA), who nearly collided with centerfielder Adrian Fitzsimon (Sacramento, CA). Gutterud was credited with a sacrifice fly and two runs scored on the play. Lauren Huddleton capped the scoring with an RBI single left.

Yale (17-9) jumped out to an early lead in the second game on Torres's ground out that scored Sloan in the first inning.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fifth. Sloan led off with an infield single. With one out, Hanson doubled down the left field line. Edwards then singled home Sloan, and Hanson scored on a passed ball.

The Pioneers (6-18) got on the board in the sixth. Melissa Mezzanotte (North Haven, CT) doubled and scored on Iazetta's single to center. Sacred Heart had the bases loaded with one out, but relief pitcher Kayla Kuretich struck out Fitzsimon and got Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) to ground out to second to limit the damage.

Sacred Heart is back in action Saturday when they visit Mount St. Mary's in NEC action. The doubleheader is set for a 1:00 pm start.
