FAIRFIELD, CT (April 10) - The Long Island Blackbirds (11-22, 7-1 NEC) used a seven-run top of the fourth inning in game one, and scored twice in both the sixth and seventh in game two to sweep the Sacred Heart Pioneers (7-11, 2-2 NEC) in conference play Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Park.
The Blackbirds drew first blood in game one on SHU hurler Bethany Lemenager (New Bedford, MA) with a Vanessa Mejia solo home run to right field. Long Island would add to their lead in the fourth inning batting around and scoring seven runs, highlighted by three-run Krystal Mejia home run. Long Island tacked on two more in the fifth to get to the final margin of 10-0.
Pitcher Jackie Brown went the distance for LIU giving up just three hits with a pair of walks and one strike out while Lemenager went four innings allowing eight runs, six of them earned, on ten hits with one walk and two stikeouts.
It would be the Pioneers who struck first in game two when Caitlin Carroll's (Los Alamitos, CA) fielder's choice ground out plated Melissa Mezzanotte (North Haven, CT) for SHU's only run. Freshman pitcher Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) made the lone run hold up until the top of the sixth when the Blackbirds scored a pair. Long Island would add another two runs in the top of the seventh and Chelsea Crosby slammed the door, allowing just one baserunner over the last four innings.
Spehar went all seven for Sacred Heart, allowing four runs, three of which earned, on seven hits with three walks and six strike outs. Crosby also went the distance allowing one run on three hits with one walk and one strike out.
The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday, April 13 when they host the Iona Gaels for a doubleheader with the first game slated to start at 3:00 PM.
