Hamden, CT - Senior Megan Spehar was 3-for-4 with an RBI and got the win in game one and three different Pioneers had two RBIs in game two as Sacred Heart posted a doubleheader sweep of Quinnipiac, 4-2, 9-1, in Northeast Conference softball action Saturday afternoon.
Spehar picked up her team leading seventh win by allowing just one earned run and six hits in game one. She was more impressive with the bat, as she ponded out three hits and an RBI.
The Bobcats took the lead in the fourth inning of the first game when senior Jill Viglione scored on a throwing error by the Sacred Heart catcher. The Pioneers quickly responded, scoring two runs in the top of the fifth off of starter Carolyn Schmolz (Ghent, N.Y.) to take a 2-1 lead.
Sacred Heart scored a single run in the sixth and seventh innings, and took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Bobcats rallied, scoring a run on a Heather Maffeo (Milton, Mass.) single. That was all they could muster, however, and Quinnipiac lost the first game, 4-2.
Freshman Jen Russell earned her fourth straight win by not allowing an earned run in game two. Freshmen Taylor Froelich and Shannon McCoy and senior Melissa Mezzanotte all had two RBI as the Pioneer offense exploded for nine runs.
The Bobcats struck first again in the second game, scoring their only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from Emily Bellush The Pioneers once again responded, this time with five runs in the top of the second off of starter Jaimie Iaquinto . The Bobcats were unable to put any more runs on the board while the Pioneers scored four more times to take the 9-1 victory.
Sacred Heart will face Central Connecticut Sunday in a doubleheader that has been moved to SHU's Pioneer Park. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
