FAIRFIELD, CT - The Sacred Heart University softball team took both games of the doubleheader against Mt. St. Mary's as they snapped a 17 game losing skid and recorded its first two Northeast Conference wins of the season. Junior Courtney Cannon went 4-6 on the day with one double and two RBI to help lead the Pioneers to two key conference wins.
In the first game the Mount took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on four hits, including an RBI triple from Maria Lutz, and two SHU errors. The Pioneers answered right back in the bottom half of the inning as the sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs on four hits and two Mount errors. Cannon got things going in the inning with a two RBI double and later scored a run.
The Mount got one run back in the top of the fourth inning, but Sacred Heart countered in the bottom of the sixth on a single from senior Leslie Konsig that drove in fellow senior Katie Ross, who singled to lead off the inning.
In the second game the Pioneers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before giving up three unearned runs in the next two innings, with Lutz scoring two of the three runs. SHU regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning as Konsig doubled and scored on a wild pitch and senior Melissa McManaman singled to score junior Tiffanie Cross-Monzo with the game-winning run.
Sophomore Chrissy DeMott picked up a win in the opening game and recorded her first save of the season in the second game, pitching 6.1 total innings and surrendering just one run. Freshman Danielle Mellin recorded the first win of her collegiate career as the starter in the second game. Jamie Johnson and Reanna Tuczynski each took a loss for the Mount.
Sacred Heart returns to action on Friday with a doubleheader at Quinnipiac, with the first game scheduled to get under way at 3:00 pm.
