Box Score

Fairfield, CT - Freshman Ashley McDonough (Lompoc, CA) scored the game winning run and was the winning pitcher as Sacred Heart topped Yale 6-5 to salvage a doubleheader split in softball action Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Park.

After Yale won the first game 4-3, the Pioneers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the night cap before the Bulldogs came roaring back to tie the game. However, in the bottom of the seventh, McDonough doubled to leadoff and went to third on a single by Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA). After freshman Amanda Bradley (Langley, BC) walked to load the bases, junior Caitlin Carroll (Los Alamitos, CA) hit a slow ground ball to third base. Yale's Meredith Parks tried to throw out McDonough at the plate but the throw was too late and the Pioneers won the game.

Sacred Heart gave itself an early cushion by scoring a run in the first inning and four more in the second. The first inning rally was highlighted by an RBI single by Carroll. In the second, Spehar doubled home two runs and then Bradley hit a two run homer to make the lead 5-0.

The Bulldogs scored five unanswered runs to tie the game, including putting up four in the fourth inning. The comeback was sparked by a two run double by junior Christina Guerland.

Junior Kate Meserve hit a homerun in the top of the sixth to tie it for the Bulldogs. McDonough relieved junior Danielle Mellin (La Canada, CA) and did not allow a run the rest of the way.

In the first game of the day, the Pioneers defense let them down, making three errors that led directly to Bulldog runs. In the third inning shortstop Melissa Mezzanotte's (North Haven, CT) throwing error allowed a run to score. Then in the top of the fifth, a fielding error by centerfielder Jazzeline Perez (Medford, CA) let in another Bulldog run.

The Pioneers tried to mount a comeback, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth. However the Bulldogs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and hung for the 4-3 victory.

Sacred Heart (8-22) is back in action Thursday when they host Hartford in doubleheader action at Pioneer Park. Game time is set for 3:00 pm.
