Fairfield, CT - Freshman Melissa Lucas had two hits and three RBI and Rachael Crossin and Kristina Tolles combined to allowed just five hits while striking out 11 as UConn swept a doubleheader from Sacred Heart, 2-0 and 10-2, Wednesday afternoon.
In game one, the Huskies scored their two runs in the third inning. With two outs, Lucas singled home Micah Truax and Allie Gendron. Those two runs proved to be all Connecticut needed as Crossin pitched a complete game two hitter, striking out nine. The Pioneers had opportunities, leaving seven runners on base, including six in the first four innings. Freshman Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) had both hits for Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart scored in the top of the first of game two when a sacrifice fly by Betsy Harvey (Unionville, CT) brought home Melissa Mezzanotte (North Haven, CT). However, UConn answered with five runs in the bottom of the second. The Huskies sent 10 batters to the plate during the inning, as Tolles Justyne Roy, Julie Towers and Lucas each had RBIs during the inning.
UConn added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The big hit came off the bat of Sarah Neuschwander She hit a two-run home run to give the Huskies a 10-1 lead.
SHU scored one run in the top of the fifth on a pinch-hit double by freshman Brittany McGarry (Long Valley, NJ).
The Pioneers will open their Northeast Conference schedule Saturday when they host Mount St. Mary's at Pioneer Park. The doubleheader will start at 1:00 pm.
