Osceola, FL - Freshman Ashley McDonough (Lompoc, CA) got the game winning hit in the eighth inning and sophomore Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) struck out nine batters in throwing a complete game as the Pioneer softball team beat Valparaiso 4-3 in action Tuesday at the Rebel Games.
McDonough's game winner was one of six Pioneer hits in the game. The Pioneers built a 3-1 lead with three runs in the second inning. Junior Jacqui Riley (Burlington, MA) had two hits and two RBI's, and freshman Betsy Harvey (Unionville, CT) added an RBI in the rally.
Valparaiso tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but Spehar was able to hold off the Crusaders attack until McDonough got the game winning hit. She did not walk a batter and allowed just seven hits in the game to notch her first win of the year.
Earlier in the day, the Pioneers dropeed a 4-3 decision to St. Bonaventure. Sacred Heart led 3-2 going to the seventh inning, but junior Anna Naggaro hit a walk off double to win it for the Bonnies in their last at bat. Sophomore Melissa Mezzanotte (North Haven, CT) had a home run for the Pioneers in the loss.
Sacred Heart (2-4) is off on Thursday before resuming play Friday at the Rebel Games. The Pioneers will face Holy Cross and Yale.
