Osceola, FL - Junior Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) tossed a complete game shutout and sophomore Betsy Harvey (Unionville, CT) had five hits and an RBI as Sacred Heart won a pair of games on the opening day of competition at the Rebel Games. The Pioneers beat IPFW 7-0 and won a 5-3 decision over St. Peters.
In the first game of the day, Spehar held IPFW to just three hits while striking out seven batters in her seven innings of work. She also had two hits, including a triple and an RBI. Senior Caitlin Carroll (Los Alamitos, CA) had a two RBI single in the first inning to get the Pioneers started. Carroll drove in another run and Harvey pounded out three hits as the Pioneers scored twice in the second and single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Against St. Peter's, Spehar and Harvey each had two hits and sophomore Jessica Perez (Santa Maria, CA) scored three runs to help the Pioneers build a 4-0 lead. The Peahens scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 4-3, but senior Danielle Mellin (La Canada, CA) came in in relief for SHU to stop the rally. Junior Melissa Mezzanotte (North Haven, CT) provided an RBI single in the top of the seventh, one of her two RBI in the game, to give the Pioneers an insurance run. Senior Bethany Lemenager (New Bedford, MA) was the winning pitcher after giving up three unearned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
The Pioneers continue play at the Rebel Games Tuesday. SHU will face Georgetown and Valparaiso.
