Osceola, FL - Senior Megan Spehar (Thousand Oaks, CA) struck out nine batters and junior Betsy Harvey (Unionville, CT) had the game winning hit in the top of the seventh inning to give Sacred Heart a 5-3 win over Holy Cross in season opening softball action Sunday at the Rebel Games. The Pioneers lost their second game of the day, 2-0, to Valpariso.
Spehar notched her first win of the season in her first start, allowing three hits and three runs in the complete game. She struck out the first batter of the game to record her 300th career strikeout. In addition to Harvey's game winning hit, senior Melissa Mezzanotte (North Haven, CT) and freshman Courtney Lee (Camarillo, CA) both had two hits and an RBI.
The Valpariso game featured the Pioneer debut of freshman pitcher Jen Russell (Seymour, CT). The rookie pitched well, allowing just four hits and two runs in six innnings. However, the Pioneers managed just three hits off Crusaders starter Andrea Zappia, who struck out 12 batters to earn the victory.
Sacred Heart continues play at the Rebel games on Monday. The Pioneers will face Fairfield at 9:00 am and take on Detroit-Mercy at 1:00 pm.
