SHU Edged by WKU To Commence Season at Chattanooga Challenge

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Sacred Heart University softball team and Western Kentucky went scoreless through the first seven innings on Thursday's opening day of the 2018 Chattanooga Challenge. The Pioneers (0-1) were unable to convert at the top of the eighth and one RBI for Hilltoppers (4-2) saw the foe emerge as the winner, 1-0, with day one in the books at Frost Stadium.

Bottom of the 8th inning – Freshman Jordan Thomas doubled to the left center, RBI, as sophomore Morgan McElroy scored.

The numbers…

  • Junior classmates, Kristen McCann and Emily Orosco, both saw action in the pitching circle. McCann struck out a game-high seven batters in her performance. Orosco tallied two. Orosco records the setback.
  • Four Hilltoppers earned hits-Kelsey McGuffin (2), Brittany Vaughn (1), Jordan Thomas (1) and Tommi Stowers (1).

Noteworthy…

  • WKU came into today's matchup toting a batting average of .368 and 38 runs scored through their first four games. At which point, the Hilltoppers were tied for 11th across the NCAA in run production with 9.5 runs per game. 

Up next…

Frost Stadium will host the Pioneers twice on Friday, February 16 for day two of the tourney. SHU faces Indiana State at 1:00 p.m. before battling host Chattanooga at 3:00 p.m.
