The Sacred Heart Softball team had two student athletes honored with the 2017 All-NEC awards. (Pitcher/Utility) Kristen McCann was selected to the All-NEC Second team for pitching, as well as her play in the outfield. McCann also received the NEC's Most Improved Player award. (Pitcher) Jamie Carlson rounded out the list being selected to the All-NEC Second team for pitching. The Pioneers are on the road for their first NEC Tournament appearance since 2011, as the #2 seed. SHU will take on Wagner in Loretto PA. on Thursday, at 3:00pm.
Kristen McCann has held down the mound this season, posting a 5-3-conference record. McCann who went 1-6 on the mound in 2016, has proved to be a major factor in the Pioneers success this season. McCann has picked up 110 strikeouts this season, in comparison to her 35 strikeouts last season. McCann sits 5th in the NEC with a 2.47 ERA, and is 3rd in the conference with 110 strikeouts.
Jamie Carlson has been the ace for the Pioneers, as she finished the regular season with a 12-12 overall record, and 5-3 conference record. Carlson has throw eight shutouts this season, and most recently threw her first career no hitter against Hartford on May 2nd. Carlson leads the NEC in strikeouts with 157, and sits 3rd with a 2.09 ERA. Carlson sits 3rd among Pioneers in career strikeouts with 589, and with six more in the tournament, will tie Assistant Coach Jen Russell for the 2nd spot all time.
