LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (April 22, 2014)—Annie Dreher (Saugus, Calif.) went 3-for-6 at the plate and scored a run as the Sacred Heart softball team dropped two games to Siena Tuesday afternoon.
The Pioneers managed just three hits in the first game, but tied the score at one in the top of the sixth as Kelyn Fillmore's (Simi Valley, Calif.) single drove home Jade Bowins (Frederick, Md.), who reached on an error.
After their only run of the game being thanks to a solo shot from junior Paige Lloyd, the Saints' bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth. Three of their first four batters singled accounting the winning runs.
Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) took the game one loss giving up all three of Siena's run over 5.1 innings. The junior gave up seven hits while striking out just one batter.
Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) gave up two runs on Mikaela Searight's homerun in the second inning of game two putting SHU behind early. The Pioneers had opportunities to score putting five runners on base in the first three innings, but couldn't get any to cross the plate.
As Mallory and Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.), who came in in relief in the fifth inning, held the Saints scoreless through the next five innings, Sacred Heart made a comeback scoring two runs in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Kate Nadler (Southbury, Conn.) and Dreher hit back-to-back singles. A fielding error allowed Fillmore to reach base and Nadler to score before Linsey DeDeomenico (Northford, Conn.) singled to short centerfield to score Dreher.
With the score tied at two at the end of the seventh, the teams headed to extra innings. The Pioneers were unable to score in the top of the eighth. Siena, however, scored the game-winner as Mikayla Powlowski's double allowed Chelsey Drew to cross the plate.
Sacred Heart will play a single game against in-state rival Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. Thursday afternoon before returning home to host Saint Francis U in the final home game of the season.
